It is difficult to recommend one vocabulary list for the UKiset, as it can be taken by students at any age between 9-and-a-half to 18 years old.
As a profiling assessment, it measures a student’s level of academic English which is then judged against peers of the same age.
We would recommend that students consult age-appropriate vocabulary lists and ensure they can spell and understand all of the words present. It is also vital that students are able to use all of the words appropriately in context.
Here are some good examples of useful UKiset vocabulary lists:
- A list of the 100 most common words in English
- A list of the 50 most common nouns in English
- A list of the 50 most common verbs in English
- A list of the 50 most common adjectives in English
- A list of the 1000 most common words in English
- A list of the 3000 most common words in English
- A list of important words for 11+ verbal reasoning
- The 11+ vocabulary list
- Another 11+ vocabulary list
We would recommend students keep individual word lists and note down any unfamiliar words (both in terms of their definition and use in context).
Students should also be tested regularly – ideally weekly - on the spelling, meaning, and use in context of the words on their list. Alongside this specific vocabulary development students should be encouraged to read widely. Asking students to listen out for and note down unfamiliar words in appropriate radio or tv programmes can also be a good way of sparking their curiosity.
