Benjamin is a qualified languages teacher who tutors French, German and Russian up to A Level and humanities at various levels. He also assists with PE and Sports Science. Before qualifying, he gained a degree in Modern Foreign Languages (German and Russian) from Durham University. Ben now tutors alongside working in a top independent school.

Foreign Languages:

I offer specialist tuition in French, German, Spanish, and Russian from school entrance level through to GCSE, A-Level, and IB. My approach is built around comprehensible input and progressive fluency training, helping students understand and communicate with greater confidence in real exam and conversational situations.

History :

I studied European and Russian History at Durham University. I tutor History at GCSE, A-Level, IB, and Undergraduate level. I help students develop secure knowledge, clear essay structure, strong source analysis, and the ability to write precise, analytical answers that meet the demands of the mark scheme.

Entrance Exams (7+/11+/13+/Common Entrance) :

I prepare students for 7+, 11+, 13+, and Common Entrance. My work covers English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, interview preparation, and exam technique. I offer a strong record (97%) of helping students secure places at competitive grammar and independent schools.

Sports Science & PE :

I provide GCSE, A-Level, and BTEC PE/Sports Science support. As a former England national athlete and Durham University sports scholar with distinction-level qualifications, I combine academic exam preparation with practical sporting insight, helping students master theory, coursework, and extended written answers.

Biography

I grew up in Manchester, attended a selective grammar school, and went on to study at Durham University as both an academic and sports scholar, spending a year abroad.

After completing my teacher training in the North East, I began my teaching career at Sherborne School before moving to the internationally renowned Institut auf dem Rosenberg in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Teaching is my vocation. I take pride in helping students progress academically while developing confidence, independence, and ambition.

Approach to Tutoring

Excellent teaching balances academic rigour with confidence-building and enjoyment. Good results are important, however education must also equip students with strong study habits, self-belief, and clarity of purpose.

My calm, kind, and patient approach is highly pupil-centred: lessons are tailored to each student, using evidence-based strategies from cognitive science to ensure learning that is enjoyable, efficient, long-lasting, and transferable.

When not tutoring

Outside my full-time work as a professional tutor, I am a husband and father, a published author of adventure novels for children and young adults, and a keen reader of history, travel writing, science fiction, and literature. I also enjoy learning languages (currently Japanese), practising martial arts, evidence-based strength training, painting, and home cooking.
